The ultra high relief striking gives this scene extraordinary physical presence: the chains, the figures, the fire, and the rubble all emerge from the field with a depth that forces the eye to move across the composition the way it would across a sculptural relief. Design – Reverse

The reverse depicts the final moments between Bödvar and Astrid. He has found her gravely wounded among the ruins, and in the silence after the battle she delivers her last words: Sunneva has been taken. The scene is framed within the jaws of a bear — the same symbolic creature whose power Bödvar will one day claim — whose open mouth encircles the two figures as if the fate it represents is already closing around them. It is a quieter composition than the obverse, more intimate, and all the more powerful for it.
